Jose Mourinho has parted ways with Fenerbahce after just one season in charge.

The new season is underway, and already the conversation is turning to managers under pressure and a few who have lost their jobs. Manchester United are part of that conversation after a slow start to the 2025/26 campaign.

After losing to Arsenal and drawing with Fulham, United reached a new low on Wednesday night, losing on penalties to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round.

Those results have added further uncertainty at Old Trafford. There’s no denying that pressure is mounting on Ruben Amorim, especially after his post-match comments following the Grimsby loss suggested he might be considering resignation.

Meanwhile, two former Manchester United managers have also lost their jobs in just the last 12 hours.

Jose Mourinho departs Fenerbahce after brief stay

Jose Mourinho took charge at Fenerbahce in 2024, guiding the club to a second-place finish in his only Turkish Super Lig season.

While they finished 11 points adrift of champions Galatasaray, their season also included a quarter-final exit from the Turkish Cup and a Europa League Round of 16 loss to Rangers.

Mourinho had managed just two league matches in the new campaign before news of his departure broke.

This week, Fenerbahce also missed out on Champions League qualification after losing their play-off tie to Benfica. They’ll now play in the Europa League this season, but Mourinho won’t be leading them from the sidelines.

The defeat proved to be the final straw for Mourinho at Fenerbahce, and his return to availability is likely to put additional pressure on managers across Europe.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mourinho sacked within 12 hours

The Turkish Super Lig could boast about having two former United managers last season.

Now, after 12 chaotic hours, they have none. Besiktas parted ways with Solskjaer following a Europa League Conference defeat to Swiss club Lausanne.

Mourinho’s departure came just 12 hours after Solskjaer was relieved of his duties at Besiktas.

After leaving Manchester United in 2021, Solskjaer stayed away from management until taking the Besiktas job in January 2025.
