Jose Mourinho continues to reach new career highs each season as his long and successful managerial career takes shape.
The 63-year-old, who won the Europa League and EFL Cup whilst with Manchester United, succeeded in large parts at Old Trafford but ultimately did not achieve the levels that some supporters wanted.
Benfica has been Mourinho’s home for the past season with him aiming to construct more success with another club after his spell at Fenerbahçe last season.
The manager’s future has been largely questioned, however, with him set for talks with Real Madrid surrounding a potential return to Spain (a move which would see him leave Portugal once again).
Now, amid these rumours, Jose Mourinho has become an invincible with him guiding Benfica to an unbeaten season following their 3-1 victory over Estoril.
The victory means that Benfica have won 23 games, drew eleven, and lost none. This is not the first time that the Portuguese club have achieved this, though, with Benfica also achieving an unbeaten season during the 1977-78 season.
But, as with that season, Benfica were unable to win the league title even with their impressive feat.
Ultimately, the club ended up finishing third in the Liga Portugal with Sporting CP finishing second and Porto winning the league title eight points ahead of Benfica.
Even with this disappointment, the achievement of being unbeaten across an entire league campaign can not be understated. It is the first time that
Mourinho has achieved this in his managerial career and signals towards how the manager continues to achieve fears even with the large scale success he has had already.
With links to Real Madrid still persisting now, focus may switch to seeing if the manager takes the decision to move away from Benfica and into a return to Real Madrid.
If he does, it would be Jose Mourinho’s third different club in just three seasons.
