Rasmus Hojlund’s Manchester United struggles were not due to a lack of effort or commitment

There was a lot of speculation surrounding Rasmus Hojlund and his future at Manchester United given how the Reds had been pushing to add more firepower in the frontline across the summer window. It was also due to the fact that the Dane striker was unable to quite replicate his form from Atalanta at Old Trafford, which pushed the Premier League heavyweights to invest heavily in his signing. That is where the patience grew thinner with him among the decision-makers at Carrington.

Hojlund accused of trying t oo hard

As the window progressed, at one point it looked like he might end up staying and fighting for his place at M16, but then Napoli swooped in for his signatures and secured his signatures on an initial loan move with an obligation which takes him to Serie A on a permanent basis.

And now that he has departed that Old Trafford turn, the supporters have been having all kinds of reflections on his time at Manchester United, with someone thinking about what went wrong while others debate why it didn’t work for Hojlund. But Melissa Reddy has taken to X with a post which cuts through all of this background noise, and quite honestly, her post tells the story better than anyone else.

The reputed journalist wrote about how the Dane was always a bright light in that dressing room despite his struggles on the pitch and how some coaches at M16 believed that his biggest flaw was how he was quite desperate to succeed. It was not a lack of talent or poor attitude but just pure eagerness, and that could be seen on the pitch. We saw how Rasmus snatched at chances at times while rushing for no decision-making at others, and this ultimately ended up with a sense of lack of confidence in front of goal.

She wrote on X:

“So deeply hope Rasmus Hojlund has a superbly enjoyable and successful spell with Napoli. His attitude, training application and professionalism was always first rate and even at the height of his struggles, he was never a negative influence nor a problem. He was actually an encouraging, supportive and “kind voice.”

Some of the coaches felt his biggest problem was he was too desperate to do well for Manchester United and would snatch at chances, plus rush his decision-making; he was often starved of service and confidence.

Some felt it was unfair to place the goalscoring burden on a 20-year-old after being too afraid to try for Harry Kane. Hojlund was not it, but there is currency in the way he carried himself, never stopped trying and demanded more of himself – especially at a club where culture has been major trouble.

A good kid that deserves to come good”

Author Opinion

Hojlund leaves United without ever really having a fair chance to show his abilities to the crowd at Old Trafford, and Melissa Reddy is right; he does deserve a fresh start now. And at Napoli he will get a new environment and definitely a bit more patience than at United. He will be at a club where he’s not expected to carry the world on his shoulders and play under a manager who will try to get the ball to him in dangerous areas.
