Carlos Alcaraz secured his 24th consecutive win on tour to reach the Wimbledon Championships final. The Spaniard will take on his arch-rival Jannik Sinner on Sunday (July 11) as he hopes to win the title for the third consecutive time. Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has now praised the 22-year-old for his exceptional run at Wimbledon.
Alcaraz is currently on a 20-match winning streak at the All England Club. In fact, he currently holds a remarkable 35-3 win-loss record on grass. The last time he lost a match on the surface was at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships against Jack Draper in the second round; since then, he has accumulated 18 consecutive wins on the surface.
Before arriving for Queen’s in June, Carlos Ferrero hinted that Alcaraz would just use the tournament as preparation for the Wimbledon Championship after a hectic clay season, where he claimed three of the four red dirt titles he competed in. Fortunately, Alcaraz went on to win Queen’s for the second time in his career.
In his opening match at the All England Club, he needed five sets to beat Fabio Fognini, who tried to upset him. The Spaniard then went on to drop only two sets in the tournament, against Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz, respectively. The five-time Grand Slam champion claimed his place in the final after beating Taylor Fritz in four sets.
During an interview with Marca, Juan Carlos Ferrero was asked if he had seen improvements in Alcaraz’s game since the tough first-round match against Fognini. The Spanish coach said that the World No.2 has continued to evolve in his game in every match and has been exceptional at the All England Club:
Here, one always tends to evolve a little more. With Carlos, he evolves day by day. Carlos, not only on grass but throughout the season he’s having, I think it’s exceptional. We have to give immense credit and immense value to what he’s doing, that tournament after tournament he’s performing at a high level. We know how difficult it is, everyone knows it, and that is admirable. And once again, we take our hats off to that.
Nonetheless, Alcaraz and Sinner will battle it out at the Center Court on Sunday (July 13). Both players have faced each other twelve times, with Alcaraz leading their head-to-head record 8-4. He has won their last five meetings on tour, including their most recent at the French Open final last month.
Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic’s semi-final clash was predicted to go for at least four or five sets. Djokovic has played great tennis from the first round to the quarter-finals, always finding a way to beat his opponents. But against Sinner, he looked to be struggling with an injury, which allowed Sinner to beat him 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
During Carlos Alcaraz’s interview after his win against Taylor Fritz, the 22-year-old was asked if he was surprised by how Sinner defeated Djokovic. The Spaniard admitted that he was very surprised as Djokovic was always a very tough challenge at Wimbledon:
That match surprised me a bit, obviously. Beating Novak is a very difficult challenge, very hard to achieve. So beating him quite easily is even more difficult. But Jannik’s level is very high, as always. I think he doesn’t decrease his level in the matches. It’s incredible what he can do on a tennis court. But yes, we will see. Today’s match surprised me a bit.
Djokovic will now continue his chase for his 25th Grand Slam. The Serbian legend recently claimed his 100th career title at the Geneva Open and will hope to become the player with the highest number of Grand Slams at the US Open in August.
