Manchester United have been on the hunt for their next permanent manager since sacking Ruben Amorim back in January 2026, with the role set to be filled this summer.
In the wake of Amorim’s sacking, Michael Carrick was turned to, hoping the Manchester United legend could hold the fort at Old Trafford.
The plan was for Carrick to be an interim manager, allowign for the club to sign an elite manager to the role in the summer ahead of next season.
On the shortlist were the likes of Carlo Ancelotti and Julian Nagelsmann, with other Premier League options like Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola also considered.
However, with the Red Devils now looking to be set for Champions League football again next year, currently sat in third-place in the Premier League, things have been looking up for Carrick.
Now, The Daily Mail has reported a major update on United’s search for their next manager, giving Michael Carrick a further boost.
The report explains that United aren’t keen on considering managers who are currently busy with preparations for the 2026 Wolrd Cup set for North America.
As such, this rules out the likes of Thomas Tuchel who is with England, Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti and Julian Nagelsmann, who is still with Germany.
While it doesn’t explicitly say they will not hire any of the trio, it does suggest that they’re unlikely to joing the Old Trafford side this summer.
This will be news to Carrick’s ears, who led the Red Devils to a 1-0 win over Chelsea this weekend, further extending their hold on a top five finish.
