Manchester United head into another crucial week knowing the January window is creeping closer, and with AFCON call-ups already complicating Ruben Amorim’s squad depth, internal discussions around midfield planning have intensified.
The club are preparing for a demanding run of fixtures, with Wolves next on the horizon and pressure growing after the frustrating draw against West Ham United.
INEOS remain focused on reinforcing the long-term structure around United’s recruitment, but several current squad uncertainties continue to dominate the background noise.
United’s midfield picture is particularly volatile, with injuries, form concerns and rotation choices all contributing to a sense of instability heading into 2025.
And with European giants circling, the future of one academy graduate is quickly turning into one of the biggest talking points around Old Trafford.
Bayern Munich are stepping up their interest in Kobbie Mainoo as the midfielder pushes to leave Manchester United in January, with Napoli also monitoring the situation, as reported by talkSPORT.
The 20-year-old does not believe he has a future at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim after struggling for minutes this season.
Bayern Munich and Napoli are among the clubs interested in England star Mainoo, who is yet to start a Premier League game this season.
Man United blocked all approaches for their academy graduate last summer.
Mainoo scored the winner for Man United in the 2024 FA Cup final, and also started for England in that summer’s Euro final.
However, the midfielder’s one and only start this term came in August’s shock Carabao Cup exit at League Two Grimsby Town.
Kobbie Mainoo has featured for 171 minutes across nine substitute appearances in the Premier League.
But he was left on the bench for the entirety of the club’s 1-1 draw with West Ham on Monday, despite Amorim using all five subs.
The Red Devils boss was asked afterwards if there was a risk that Mainoo would become demoralised by his lack of senior action.
Amorim said: “I see it. I just want to win, I try to put the players, I don’t look who it is, I don’t care about that, I’m just trying to put the best players on the pitch.”
Mainoo’s frustration has intensified to the point where he is now pushing for a move, and Bayern’s long-term admiration places the Bundesliga giants at the front of the queue.
Napoli’s interest remains active as well, with the Serie A club exploring January midfield options should the opportunity arise.
United meanwhile must weigh up squad needs, AFCON absences and squad morale before making any decision, but the pressure is undeniably growing, and Europe’s elite are ready to strike.
