Kobbie Mainoo has had a rough ride over the last year, going from star player to benchwarmer under Ruben Amorim.
The 20-year-old broke into the Manchester United squad under Erik ten Hag, winning the FA Cup and gaining a Golden Boy nomination in the process.
On top of that, he impressed Gareth Southgate, earning a call up to the England squad for the 2024 Euros, becoming a key part of the starting line-ups, much like at Old Trafford.
However, the arrival of Ruben Amorim at United spelt disaster for Mainoo as the talented young midfielder fell out of favour, to only making cameo appearances from off the bench.
This lack of game time cost Mainoo his England spot, and a new contract, with the United academy graduate wanting a loan spell away to get more minutes on the pitch.
Ultimately the request was rejected by United’s heirarchy, showing the value they hold in him.
Now, under Michael Carrick, Kobbie Mainoo is once more on the up, with Manchester United wanting to acknowledge that.
Manchester Evening News has reported that The Red Devils are planning to start contract negotiations with the talented midfielder.
The plan for United is to open up conversations which they hope will be completed by the end of the season.
Mainoo has already triggered all of his performance related bonuses in his current contract, however his camp believe they don’t reflect his true value at the club.
His recent form against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham have all reinvigorated United’s desire to retain their homegrown star.
For now, The Red Devils will be hoping to seal a deal which has been on the cards for well over a year, with contract talks being discussed before Amorim arrived in November 2024.
