Anthony Martial could be offered another opportunity to rebuild his career, with the former Manchester United forward attracting interest from Spain.
Few players arrived at Old Trafford with as much immediate excitement as Martial.
Signed from Monaco as a teenager in 2015, he announced himself by coming off the bench and gliding through Liverpool’s defence to score on his debut.
His combination of close control, acceleration and composure made him look capable of becoming United’s long-term attacking star.
There were still excellent periods afterwards, particularly under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when Martial looked far more comfortable playing centrally and produced his best goalscoring campaign in 2019/20.
However, his United career eventually became increasingly stop-start.
Injuries repeatedly disrupted his rhythm, competition for attacking places intensified and his unsuccessful loan at Sevilla failed to provide the reset he needed.
Martial eventually left United in 2024 before spells with AEK Athens and Monterrey, but neither move restored him to anything close to the level once expected of him.
The 30-year-old is now available again and was recently offered to Everton, who are short of centre-forward options.
A return to Spain could instead materialise.
Marcus Rashford showed last season that a change to La Liga can offer a former United attacker a fresh environment, spending the campaign on loan at Barcelona.
According to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto on X, Malaga are now evaluating the possibility of signing Martial to strengthen their attack.
Moretto reports that the Frenchman has been offered to the La Liga club, with his ability to operate either as a striker or from the wing potentially making him an attractive option.
For Martial, it would also represent a return to a league he already knows from his brief Sevilla spell in 2022.
Malaga are back competing in La Liga and adding a player with Martial’s experience would be a significant move, even if his recent career means there is obvious risk attached.
At his best, Martial could give them something difficult to find cheaply: a technically gifted forward capable of carrying the ball, drifting across the frontline and finishing calmly when confidence is flowing.
