Lautaro Martinez Reveals Different Mindset After Difficult Qatar Campaign

Lautaro Martinez is heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a very different mindset from the one he had in Qatar. The Argentina national team forward was part of the squad that lifted the trophy in 2022, but injuries kept him from showing his best version on the field.

This time, Martinez says he has prepared himself much better mentally and physically, and he feels ready to play a bigger role as Argentina try to defend their World Cup crown.

Speaking on what is different this time around the 28-year-old said, “I prepared myself very well, mentally more than anything for this World Cup”.

He continued, “You know what Qatar meant for me because of my injury. Individually, I didn’t have the tournament the way I wanted to and I didn’t arrive the way I wanted to either. Now I feel very well. We have to go and defend what we achieved in Qatar”.

Argentina’s final preparations are giving Lautaro Martinez the kind of platform he probably wanted before the World Cup.

With Lionel Messi not risked because of recent hamstring fatigue, the spotlight shifted slightly toward the rest of Argentina’s attack. Martinez made the most of it, scoring from the spot in a comfortable win over Honduras, while Giuliano Simeone also found the net.

For Lautaro, that goal is useful momentum. He has already spoken about how frustrating Qatar was for him personally, even though Argentina won the tournament. This time, he looks determined to arrive in a better place, both physically and mentally, and contribute more directly to the title defense.

Scaloni will still want Messi fully ready when the real games begin, but Argentina showing they can function without him in a warm-up match is a positive sign.

Around the rest of the soccer world, Portugal also got through Chile, though Rafael Leao’s red card could become a problem depending on the suspension. Cristiano Ronaldo featured before halftime, while Brazil, Germany, and Belgium also picked up wins as the countdown to the tournament gets very real.
