Lazio have announced that club captain Mattia Zaccagni sustained a lesion during Sunday’s clash against Cagliari.
The 31-year-old has been in form since the start of the season, playing a crucial role in the team’s astonishing run. He has thus far scored two goals, and he leads the league’s assists charts with five. Despite losing his uncle, the mourning skipper insisted on taking the field last weekend when the Biancocelesti hosted Cagliari. However, he was unable to finish the game.
Early in the second half, Zaccagni left the pitch while clutching his thigh. While the initial reports were reassuring, the results of the clinical tests detected a muscle injury, as confirmed by the official Lazio website on Wednesday.
SS Lazio announces that footballer Mattia Zaccagni underwent diagnostic tests today following the injury sustained during the league match against Cagliari.
Tests revealed a lesion of the left quadriceps femoris. The player has already begun the treatment program, will be monitored daily, and will be reevaluated with further tests in the coming days.
As usual, the official note didn’t disclose a timetable for the recovery. Nevertheless, several sources, including La Lazio Siamo Noi, estimate a recovery period of at least 30 days. So, in addition to skipping Sunday’s clash against Napoli, Zaccagni is unlikely to be available immediately after the international break. Hence, he is also expected to miss the home fixture against Lecce on November 21.
This is a major blow for Gennaro Gattuso, who had recently identified Zaccagni as the one player whom he considers an automatic starter. Albert Gudmundsson could have been the most natural replacement on the left wing, but the Icelandic international is also unavailable after dislocating his shoulder during a UEFA Nations League game in September.
