After a sensational start to his tenure in the Italian capital, Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso should soon earn a new contract.

The 48-year-old arrived at Formello with modest expectations, given how the previous campaign unfolded, not to mention the club’s dire finances and the market restrictions. Gattuso himself was coming off an immensely disappointing stint at the helm of the Italian national team, which ended with another failed bid to qualify for the World Cup.

The Biancocelesti’s concerns hicked up when the team was shockingly eliminated from the opening round of the Coppa Italia at the hands of Mantova in what was a disastrous debut for the new tactician. Nevertheless, Lazio have been virtually flawless ever since, winning nine of their first 10 Serie A games. Their most recent victory over Cagliari put them at the top of the table, three points clear of Inter Milan.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the club’s hierarchy is planning to reward Gattuso for his remarkable work by offering him a new contract with better terms. The former midfielder initially signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season, which would be triggered by a Top 12 finish in the league table.

The manager currently earns a net salary of €1.2 million, so a pay rise is expected. Lazio president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani are both in favour of an improved new deal. The hierarchy is also finalising Romano Floriani Mussolini’s renewal, with the in-form Gustav Isaksen expected to follow suit.
