Lazio Reach Renewal Agreement With Out-Of-Contract Midfielder

Lazio and Danilo Cataldi are reportedly on the cusp of signing a new long-term contract after reaching an agreement.

The 32-year-old is one of the few Lazio academy products in the club’s first team. He has been a member of the senior squad since 2013, but had to undergo loan experiences at Crotone, Genoa, and Benevento. He left the club on a sour note in the summer of 2024, after being overlooked in favor of Mattia Zaccagni when the club had to appoint a new captain following Ciro Immobile’s exit.

That summer, the midfielder joined Fiorentina on loan with an option to buy. But despite producing a solid campaign in Florence, the Viola opted against keeping him, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for Lazio. Cataldi rejoined Maurizio Sarri’s ranks last summer and became an automatic starter due to Nicolo Rovella’s injury struggles.

Cataldi is one of several Lazio players running on an expiring contract. But while his teammates are facing an uncertain future, Il Messaggero (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) reveals that Cataldi will remain at Formello for years to come, as the two parties have reaching an agreement to extend the contract. The official announcement should arrive in the coming days.

The experienced midfielder is expected to act as an understudy for Rovella, who has regained his fitness following a nightmarish campaign. However, Cataldi might miss the first few weeks of the season, as he continues to recover from a groin surgery he underwent in May. The Roman has thus far made 276 senior appearances for the Aquile, scoring 13 goals and providing 19 assists.
