Lazio and Italy forward Mattia Zaccagni has gone under the knife to resolve a long-standing injury problem.

The statement from his club confirmed the operation was performed to fix the groin pain syndrome that had been limiting his performances for several months.

It was planned to delay the surgery until the summer, so that now he can have a period of convalescence and should be available to begin pre-season training with his teammates.

The squad will get together at the Formello training ground in Rome to start work with returning coach Maurizio Sarri on July 14.

New start for Zaccagni at Lazio

Zaccagni celebrated his 30th birthday only last week and has been a Lazio player since the summer of 2021.

This season, he contributed 10 goals and nine assists in 46 competitive appearances for the club.

It will be a less intensive campaign than usual for Lazio, because they failed to qualify for any European tournaments, so only have Serie A and the Coppa Italia to worry about.

This should give Sarri more time to work with the squad in training after they went through two different coaches since his departure in March 2024.
