Aside from their shocking Coppa Italia elimination at the hands of Mantova, Lazio have been virtually flawless since the start of the season, exceeding all expectations. Gennaro Gattuso’s men began their Serie A campaign with three hard-fought victories over Bologna, Genoa, and Udinese.
The winning run was halted by an entertaining 2-2 draw against AC Milan at the Olimpico, when they wasted a two-goal lead. Nevertheless, the Biancocelesti rebounded in style, returning from Venice with a 2-0 win that allowed them to catch Roma and Inter at the league summit, but they remain third in the table due to an inferior goal difference.
Ivan Juric was staring at another swift dismissal as his team picked up a single point from the first four league fixtures. Many would argue that Monza deserved more from their defeats to Inter Milan (1-4), Udinese (2-3), and Lecce (2-3), but lapses of concentration at the back cost them dearly.
Luckily for the Lombards, they were finally able to pick up their first victory since returning to the top flight when they hosted Udinese just before the international break. The 2-1 win will give Juric some breathing room, as it elevated him to 16th place in the standings. Moreover, the Biancorossi have been enjoying a stellar Coppa Italia, eliminating Avellino (3-0) and Torino (1-0) to book their place in the Round of 16.
Lazio (4-3-3): Mandas; Floriani Mussolini, Doekhi, Leite, Tavares; Frattesi, Belahyane, Taylor; Isaksen, Noslin, Zaccagni.
Monza (3-4-2-1): Tornqvist; Kouadio, Lucchesi, Carboni; Birindelli, Akinsanmiro, Folorunsho, Mangas; Colpani, Cutrone; Varela
Many observers have described this match as a potential banana skin for the high-flying Lazio, and rightfully so. After all, Monza’s 16th place in the table doesn’t truly reflect the level they displayed in the early weeks of the campaign. Moreover, some of Lazio’s key players could return tired from the international break.
That being said, the Biancocelesti should have quality among their ranks to put multiple goals past Monza’s shaky defences, which have already shipped in 12 goals in five Serie A games.
