Manuel Lazzari examined Lazio’s inconsistency between Serie A and the Champions League, and reflected on his ups and downs under Maurizio Sarri.
The Biancocelesti’s 2023-24 season has been marred by wild inconsistency, with the team looking poor and unfocused in the league but securing a spot in the Champions League knockout stages.
Pressure has mounted on Sarri, but Lazio have kept faith in the coach. The club are now fighting to restore order in Serie A, keen to start quickly climbing to the European spots as they look to stay involved in the race for a top four finish.
Speaking in a press conference (via TMW), Lazzari first spoke about the team’s European victory over Celtic.
We hope it leaves us with a lot of energy and adrenaline to immediately throw ourselves back into the league, where we are late. We don’t know why we play great matches in the Champions League and not in the league.
It’s the opposite of last year. However, progression to the next round in Europe is never a given and is important, but tomorrow against Cagliari it will be in or out. We must give a strong and definitive signal.
The 30-year-old reflected on his role change from wing back to full back.
I spent my entire career as a wing back until Sarri arrived. Then I had to adapt, especially in the first two years. It’s another role, another football. This year I feel much better, and I also think it shows. I think more about defending than attacking, that’s what the coach wants.
I have much more space to attack but I often arrive less focused at the end because the distance to cover is greater. I try to be concentrated for 90 minutes, being a defender is not like being a midfielder or attacker.
If you make a mistake, it’s a problem. I turned 30 but you never stop learning. Until three years ago I would never have thought of being a full-back, now I’m very happy to have done it.
He discussed his dreams of being a regular for the Italy national team.
Every player’s dream is the national team, perhaps being in the squad for a European Championship or World Cup.
It’s a dream, but there is a lot of competition, there are many strong full backs. Only by doing well with Lazio will I be able to have any chance for the national team.
Lazzari reflected on his ups and downs under Sarri.
When a player doesn’t play, he loses a bit of confidence, he’s less happy, but I’ve grown a lot mentally in these three years.
The season is long, there are periods when you are better and others when you are worse. The important thing is to always train as best as you can and take the opportunities you have.
He spoke about the departure of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and the arrival of Mateo Guendouzi.
With Sergej, we had known each other for five years, everything was simple, just one look was enough to understand each other on the pitch. Lazio lost a great player, he made the difference, but many other players have arrived who can become like him.
Guendouzi is really strong, he is different from Sergej, but he is fitting in very well. Lazio made a great deal for him. With Isaksen we got on well against Celtic, we are happy with how he played. Let’s hope that now he will make a difference in the league too.
The 30-year-old commented on if the team felt strong after their second-place finish last term.
No, I don’t think so. Last year we had a great season, but we certainly didn’t lack humility. It may seem that we lack malice and personality, as in Salerno. The league remains our priority and we need to make a change as soon as possible, we need to wake up.
He weighed in on the new signings.
It’s normal that they need time. Especially those arriving from abroad, unlike Rovella for example. Sarri asks for certain things, all it takes is one person who doesn’t do them and it all blows over. They need time and patience.
Finally, Lazzari commented on the usage of Ciro Immobile and Valentin Castellanos.
I always see Ciro very calm and happy, the mood after Celtic was very high. He is confident. He has received a lot of criticism, but he is fine. He is a very strong man, both physically and mentally, he is good at looking ahead and focusing only on the pitch.
Ciro is better at going deep, Taty comes forward more to make the team play. They are both great value, we are lucky to have them. Based on the match, the coach will decide who will play.

Chelsea return to Champions League action when they face Qarabag on Wednesday night in Azerbaijan. Enzo Maresca's side make the trip to Baku for matchday four in the Champions League, with Chelsea looking to claim a third consecutive victory in the competition. After opening matchday defeat to Bayern Munich, Chelsea have bounced back with wins over Benfica and Ajax to put them in a healthy position heading into Wednesday's clash against Qarabag. Qarabag have also started positively in the Champions League this term. They won their opening two games against Benfica and Copenhagen, before narrowly losing 3-1 to Athletic Bilbao last time out. Chelsea and Qarabag have met previously in the Champions League during the 2017/18 season, which saw the Blues win both home and away group fixtures by an aggregate score of 10-0. Maresca's side will be keen to make it three consecutive wins over Qarabag, which will see Joao Pedro return from suspension after his red card vs Benfica. Following Chelsea's 1-0 win over Spurs in the Premier League, Maresca is likely to ring the changes once again, offering opportunities to the likes of Filip Jorgensen, Jorrel Hato and Tyrique George to likely start. Enzo Fernandez is relishing a return to European action. When previewing Wednesday's clash to Chelsea's in-house media team, he said: "We're ready. We love playing in the Champions League. The NFL trade deadline is 24 hours away, and the Washington Commanders have been thrust firmly into a seller position after falling to the Seattle Seahawks 38-14 to fall to 3-6 on the year. There was hope that a solid defensive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 would transfer to an even better showing against the Seahawks. Still, ultimately, the Commanders fell further than ever before, and with the loss of quarterback Jayden Daniels, there isn’t much outside hope left for the season, despite eight games remaining on the schedule. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Washington may not be punting on the season, but may be looking to move players as the deadline nears. The First Names to Surface “Sources: The Commanders have been open to trading several players, including OL Andrew Wylie and OL Nick Allegretti, both of whom bring extensive starting and playoff experience,” Schultz reported. “Wylie has valuable position flexibility, having played both guard spots and right tackle during his career.” Why These Players Make Sense Both Wylie and Allegretti arrived at the Commanders with Super Bowl experience, having been part of championship Kansas City Chiefs rosters in the past. Although both have played important roles on this team at times, they were eventually replaced by younger options. For Wylie, his replacement in the starting lineup came in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft when the team drafted right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. out of Oregon. Allegretti started all of last year at left guard for Washington but was moved to the right side to start the season while the team tried second-year lineman Brandon Coleman at his position after trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil in the offseason. With Sam Cosmi returning from his knee injury, both Wylie and Allegretti now serve backup roles with versatility. Wylie has the ability to play as a tackle and guard. At the same time, Allegretti can also serve as a team’s center and was counted on at times last year to help set protections when center Tyler Biadasz was battling injury. The Potential Return Each player would likely return a future Day 3 draft pick to the Commanders, who currently have six picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, including two in the sixth round after trading away second and fourth round picks to the Houston Texans for Tunsil. Of course, there’s also a possibility Washington could look to trade player for player in this scenario, as Schultz’s report doesn’t state exclusively that the team is looking for draft capital. With eight games remaining, and a ‘never say die’ approach to the game, we wouldn’t be totally floored if the Commanders tried to bring in players at other positions to try and save their sinking season before it takes on too much water. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, November 4, at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Entering the offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies must shake things up after running mostly the same roster back for three consecutive years and suffering three straight exits short of the World Series. But Philadelphia seems more likely to make a trade than sign a big-name free agent this offseason. First baseman Bryce Harper ($27.5M in 2026, per Spotrac), SS Trea Turner ($27.3M) and RHPs Zack Wheeler ($42M) and Aaron Nola ($24.6M) take up a huge amount of the payroll, so the Phillies may seek cost-effective options in the trade market. Could 22-year-old Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero be an option for the Phillies? Phillies are likely to trade All-Star Alec Bohm this offseason For the past couple of offseasons, Philadelphia has been rumored to be in the market to trade 2024 All-Star third baseman Bohm, who is coming off a down power season (11 HR, 49 RBI). With one year left on his deal before he becomes a free agent, Bohm probably will be jettisoned by the Phillies, who are projected by Spotrac to offer him $10.25M in arbitration. Philadelphia could better use that money to re-sign designated hitter Kyle Schwarber or catcher J.T. Realmuto. Bohm batted .287 in 120 games last season but could benefit from a change of scenery to get him back on track to where he was in 2024 (97 RBI and 44 doubles). Phillies, Rays could make a deal With Bohm unlikely to be on the Opening Day roster, Philadelphia probably will find another option. Pending free agent Alex Bregman (18 HR, .273 BA) may not return to the Boston Red Sox. He's a fit for the Phillies, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. But Bregman would command a high salary, as would Seattle's Eugenio Suárez, who also is a pending free agent. Feinsand listed the Angels, Mariners and Pirates as fits for the 34-year-old, who had 49 homers and a .228 batting average last season. Debuting at 19 in 2023, Caminero was an injury replacement All-Star in 2025 and would fit in perfectly with the Phillies. He could be the cleanup hitter the team has lacked and provide needed protection for Harper. Caminero — who is set to make $820,000 in 2026, according to Spotrac — has plenty of power (45 HR, sixth in big leagues in 2025) and hit for a decent average, .264, last season. “There's no denying his talent, and what he can cover in and off the plate away is just amazing to me," Rays manager Kevin Cash said of Caminero, according to Adam Berry of MLB.com. Acquiring Caminero would likely cost the Phillies one or two of their top prospects and a big-league player. The Phillies have the prospect capital and major league talent to get a deal like this done — if they’re willing to pull the trigger.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud suffered a concussion in the second quarter of the Houston Texans' 18-15 home loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday when he took a crunching hit as he attempted to slide following a scramble. Broncos cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine was initially penalized for unnecessary roughness, but referees eventually picked the flag up after a replay showed that Abrams-Draine hadn't hit Stroud in the head. While speaking with reporters on Monday, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans addressed his thoughts on that play. C.J. Stroud concussion showed when quarterbacks are, aren't protected "It’s a tough play," Ryans said, per Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle. "Quarterback is sliding. I thought quarterbacks are protected when they slide. But what I’m learning is, as long as you don’t hit them in the head or neck area, if they slide and you hit them in the chest, then that is just fine. That is what I learned." As ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime shared, Ryans said shortly after the Texans fell to 3-5 on Sunday that he felt the hit on Stroud was unnecessary roughness because Abrams-Draine "hit the quarterback when he was sliding and giving himself up." Stroud was still in the NFL's concussion protocol as of Monday afternoon, and it's unclear if he'll be available for Houston's home game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3) on Nov. 9. "I spoke to him last night," Ryans said about Stroud. "He’s feeling a little bit better. We’ll see how the week goes and how he progresses throughout the week." What Texans would expect if Davis Mills has to start vs. Jaguars Backup quarterback Davis Mills replaced Stroud against the Broncos and completed 17-of-30 pass attempts for 137 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Mills began Monday atop the Houston depth chart with Stroud not cleared to practice. "I expect him to go out and do his best," Ryans said about Mills possibly getting the start for the Jacksonville game. "Just play the offense the proper way and make great decisions with the football." Shortly after Ryans spoke with media members, ESPN BET had the Texans as 1.5-point favorites over the Jaguars. Ryans may not reveal Stroud's status for the Jacksonville game before Friday at the earliest.
