The match will also make history, becoming the first-ever club football fixture to be staged at Croke Park, Ireland’s largest stadium, which boasts a capacity of around 82,000 spectators.

The famous venue has not hosted a football match since November 2009, when the Republic of Ireland took on France in a dramatic FIFA World Cup play-off in front of almost 79,000 supporters.

With so much history attached to the occasion, the meeting between Manchester United and Leeds promises to be another memorable chapter in one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.

For United, it also represents another valuable opportunity for Carrick to fine-tune his squad before attention fully turns towards the start of the new campaign.
