Manchester United’s defensive situation has been one of the club’s biggest problems throughout the season, with injuries and uncertainty forcing constant changes at the back.

Several defenders have spent long periods unavailable, while others have struggled to fully convince despite flashes of promise.

As a result, the club’s recruitment team has been exploring multiple defensive profiles ahead of the summer window, including younger players capable of adding both depth and long-term value.

One emerging Championship defender has now entered the conversation.

Ben Nelson on Manchester United’s radar

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are understood to be keeping tabs on Ben Nelson, the highly rated Leicester City centre-back who has previously attracted interest from clubs such as Manchester City and Chelsea.

Now 22 years old, Ben Nelson has continued to build a strong reputation as a physically imposing but technically capable defender.

Standing at 6ft 5in, he offers obvious aerial presence, but his versatility has also caught attention, with the defender capable of operating at left-back when required.

That flexibility could prove valuable for United given the current state of their defensive options.

The club have faced repeated setbacks in central defence this season.

Matthijs de Ligt has struggled with a serious back injury that kept him sidelined for much of the campaign before recently undergoing surgery, while Lisandro Martinez has once again dealt with fitness concerns that disrupted his momentum.

At the same time, Leny Yoro has endured a difficult run of form during parts of the season, and young defender Ayden Heaven appears to have fallen out of favour within Michael Carrick’s plans.

Although Harry Maguire recently signed a contract extension, there remains awareness that the experienced defender is entering the later stages of his career, making succession planning increasingly important.

On the left side of defence, Luke Shaw has actually enjoyed one of his more consistent seasons in recent years, but his lengthy injury history continues to create uncertainty over long-term reliability.

Meanwhile, Tyrell Malacia has now departed the club, further reducing options in that area.

Nelson’s ability to cover both centre-back and left-back therefore makes him an appealing profile, especially as United look for players capable of strengthening squad depth without necessarily arriving as guaranteed starters.

The defender was is highly regarded by Enzo Maresca.

The interest appears less about an immediate headline signing and more about building a stronger, more reliable squad structure around the younger core already developing at the club.
