Leny Yoro changes international allegiance

Leny Yoro has spent much of his young career representing France.

He has progressed through the country’s youth setup as one of the most highly-rated defenders of his generation.

The Manchester United defender first represented France at Under-17 level in 2021, making his debut against Spain before subsequently featuring for the Under-18s.

Yoro’s rapid development eventually saw him move into the Under-21 setup, where he was called up by Thierry Henry in 2023.

He made his debut against Denmark during that international break, continuing his progression towards senior football.

That rise was also reflected at club level.

Yoro established himself as one of Lille’s most exciting young players before United won the race for his signature in 2024, despite interest from Real Madrid.

His start to life at Old Trafford was disrupted by a foot injury suffered during pre-season, forcing him to spent several month on the sidelines.

Once fit, however, Yoro began showing why United had been so keen to secure his services.

The centre-back has gradually become an important part of Michael Carrick’s plans, particularly because of his ability to defend in space and remain composed when building from the back.

Carrick has also shown his willingness to use that versatility.

Yoro started his United career as a centre-back.

However, he was deployed at right-back in yesterday’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, giving the manager another way to utilise his athleticism and defensive qualities.

Leny Yoro makes decision over his international future

According to AfricaSoccer.com, Yoro has reportedly chose to represent Ivory Coast at senior international level.

The decision would bring an end to the uncertainty surrounding his international future and could make him available for the Elephants during the September international break.

Leny Yoro would join a squad that already includes his United teammate Amad Diallo, who made a huge impact at the 2026 World Cup.

Amad scored twice for Ivory Coast during the tournament, including a dramatic late winner against Ecuador in the group stage.

However, he was left on the bench for the Round of 32 against Norway before coming on and scoring a brilliant equaliser.

Ivory Coast eventually lost 2-1 to Erling Haaland’s side.

Given Amad’s impact, it is fair to wonder whether Ivory Coast could have gone further had he started that match.
