Lionel Messi has just won another accolade, but not in football. The Argentina captain has been awarded the highest honor of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), the Doctor Honoris Causa.
The Superior Council unanimously approved the decision, acknowledging Messi’s professional career and his representation of Argentina and the values UBA says he has shown in his career. The university’s announcement also attributes the honor to his influence off the field.
It is a recognition at a pivotal time in Messi’s international career. The distinction will be presented at the Estadio Monumental on October 6, 2026, prior to Argentina’s final match against Benin. The ceremony will be held before Messi’s last game for the national team.
UBA says Messi’s career is a model of excellence, perseverance, humility, and ethical behavior, and a constant dedication to the cause of Argentina. The university also noted his success with the national team, such as the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2024 Copa America.
UBA also highlighted Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final, where Messi was a member of the team that came up with the runner-up finish. The university said the accolade was a tribute to his soccer career but also to his cultural impact and his role as a representative of Argentine identity.
The Doctor Honoris Causa is the highest of the honorary degrees awarded by UBA, for those who have made outstanding contributions in various fields such as professional, cultural, social, and academic life. According to the university’s rules, the title is honorary and does not correspond to a degree.
That’s a distinction from the traditional doctorate, which is earned by studying at a university. Rather, it puts him in the company of other distinguished personalities who have been honored by UBA for their outstanding performance and impact in their respective areas.
The accolade is just another feather in Messi’s cap, as he continues to rack up individual and team awards. The event will precede his goodbye to Argentina and link his sporting legacy with recognition from one of Argentina’s leading universities.
