Even at the age of 38, international soccer icon Lionel Messi is still going strong and is pursuing even more championship silverware with Major League Soccer's Inter Miami FC. But what does the future hold for him beyond the 2025 MLS Cup?

As it turns out, three more years.

According to soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Messi has signed a new contract extension at Miami that will run through December 2028. The verbal agreement was reportedly reached last week but has now been approved by MLS.

Messi in MLS

Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami in 2023 marked one of the most transformative moments in Major League Soccer history. The Argentine superstar instantly elevated the profile of the club and the league, drawing global attention and record-breaking crowds. In his first few months, Messi led Inter Miami to victory in the 2023 Leagues Cup — the franchise’s first major trophy — showcasing his trademark brilliance with clutch goals and playmaking. His chemistry with former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba revitalized the team, turning them from MLS underdogs into legitimate contenders almost overnight.

In the seasons that followed, Messi continued to dominate MLS competition, contributing both on the scoresheet and as a mentor to younger players. His presence not only boosted Inter Miami’s competitiveness but also reshaped the business of soccer in the U.S., driving massive increases in ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and global viewership. Even as injuries and age began to limit his appearances, Messi’s influence on and off the field remained unmatched. His tenure with Inter Miami cemented his legacy as a global ambassador for the sport and as the player who helped usher MLS into a new era of international prominence.

As it stands, Messi's squad will be taking on Nashville SC this weekend in the opening Round of 16 in the MLS Cup playoffs.

He's already led the team to two pieces of silverware. Can he secure a third this year?
