Inter Miami and Argentine superstar Lionel Messi revealed in a recent interview for Luzu TV that his main goal after retiring is not to be a coach, although he would like to remain involved in soccer in another way.
Messi, 38, recently extended his contract with the Herons until 2028, and apparently, after this commitment ends, what interests the Argentine is becoming the owner of a soccer club.
Unlike many soccer legends who choose to become head coaches, Messi has his priorities clear. During the chat, the captain of the Argentine national team ruled out the possibility of coaching.
"To be honest, I don't see myself as a coach. I like being a manager, but if I had to choose one of the three, I'd like to be the owner," Messi said.
"I would like to be able to have my own club, to be able to grow it, start from the bottom, and be able to give opportunities to the kids, to the people to grow and make an important club," he added.
Although the announcement of his desires made an impact, Messi has already taken his first steps in sports management. Currently, he shares co-ownership of Deportivo LSM, a team in the fourth division of Uruguay, along with his friend and teammate, Luis Suárez.
Messi's performance in the current season reinforces his relevance. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner earned the MLS Golden Boot with the following statistics:
Messi's immediate future on the pitch is secure. The player signed a three-year contract extension that ties him to Inter Miami until the 2028 season. Next June, Messi will turn 39, just around the time he is expected to lead Argentina in the defense of its title at the 2026 World Cup.
