Highlights

  • Lionel Messi made history twice in one game.
  • Two assists against New England Revolution.
  • Carlos Vela record is on stake.

Lionel Messi keeps rewriting the record books in what has been his best MLS season so far. With three assists in the against the New England Revolution, the Inter Miami captain reached 40 goal contributions this season.

While it’s no surprise that Messi has reached this mark, his next milestone is Carlos Vela’s record of 49 goal contributions in a single MLS season.

Additionally, the three assists mark his 100th goal contribution for Inter Miami in only 80 games—66 goals and 34 assists.

With the playoffs approaching, if Miami advance through the later rounds, Messi could equal—or even surpass—that record.

Inter Miami have already secured their playoff spot, but they continue to push for a higher finish in the table to build momentum heading into the postseason.

After losing the Leagues Cup to the Seattle Sounders, the MLS title remains their only remaining objective this year. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon and a contract renewal looming, both Messi and Inter Miami have a promising short-term future.

Lionel Messi Is Five Assists Away From a New Career Milestone

Messi is also closing in on another personal record.

With his two assists against New England, he is now just five assists away from reaching 400 career assists—a number unmatched by any active player, none of whom have even surpassed 300.

At this pace, Messi could enter the 2026 World Cup after one of the best seasons of his career at age 38.

Surrounded by one of Argentina’s most talented generations ever, the reigning world champions could realistically aim for back-to-back titles, though several national teams are also building squads capable of challenging for glory.

Only five assists away from breaking into the 400th of his career, Messi could either reach this number for Inter Miami or playing for the Argentina national team on the friendly matches left in 2025.
