Lionel Messi Reacts to Argentina’s New Partnership Ahead of Algeria Game
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Argentina is back on the world stage and the expectations couldn't be higher. Lionel Scaloni's squad opens its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Group J, carrying the weight of being reigning champions into every match they play.

Before the football takes over, Lionel Messi stepped into a different kind of spotlight.

On Sunday, Messi took to Instagram to help unveil a new commercial partnership between prediction markets platform Kalshi and the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino.

The post also gave fans a shot at winning a signed AFA jersey, and featured Messi alongside teammates Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul, all three wearing Argentina's iconic sky blue and white.

Kalshi Partners With AFA Ahead of Argentina's World Cup Opener

Kalshi was announced as an official sponsor of the defending world champions for the duration of the tournament. The deal includes co-branded campaigns and social media content, with Kalshi also gaining rights to use official AFA branding across its promotional material.

The partnership rollout drew plenty of attention, but Argentina's real business starts on the pitch.

La Albiceleste enters the Algeria matchup as clear favorites, though opening games at the World Cup have a way of keeping teams honest. Argentina found that out the hard way in 2022 when Saudi Arabia handed them one of the most stunning upsets in tournament history.

Algeria is built to play physically and look for chances on the counter, so finding a rhythm early will matter more than most expect.

Argentina's Group J Schedule and the Road Ahead

After Algeria, Argentina faces Austria on June 22 and then Jordan on June 27, with both matches set for Dallas. It's a manageable group on paper, but one that demands focus from the start.

Messi heads into this tournament making his sixth World Cup appearance, a number very few players have ever reached. Playing his club football in Miami also means he knows several of these venues better than most of his opponents will.

Still, this Argentina squad is deeper than just one man. Scaloni has built a roster that can share the load, and they proved that in Qatar. Now they get another shot at doing it all over again.
