Lionel Messi, the man who is widely regarded as the greatest football (soccer) player to ever play the game, seems to be enjoying his time in Miami.

His future with Inter Miami has been questioned, with his current contract set to expire at the end of 2025, however, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that both sides are interested in continuing their relationship.

According to Romano’s sources close to the club, Messi and Miami are beginning to take the initial steps to extend his contract.

“Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship,” the source said. “The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen.”

Messi, a 2022 World Cup winner and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has completely changed Inter Miami after signing in July 2023. He has guided the team to the 2023 Leagues Cup championship and a 2024 Supporters' Shield. Despite injury setbacks, his 21 goals and 11 assists in 2024 cemented his domination in Major League Soccer.

Most recently, Inter Miami became the first MLS side in history to defeat a European club during the Club World Cup after they defeated FC Porto 2-1. Following that victory, Messi’s squad took on the 2025 champions of Europe yesterday where they lost 4-0 to PSG.

Messi's camp, which prioritizes family stability in Miami, is said to be optimistic that the talks are going well. Given that Messi's participation continues to raise MLS's image internationally, the shared ambition is a victory for the league.
