Manchester United have had to be patient with Lisandro Martinez since bringing the Argentine defender to Old Trafford from Ajax in 2022.
His aggressive approach, confidence on the ball and willingness to step into midfield quickly made him a popular figure among supporters.
Lisandro Martinez also played an important role during his early seasons, helping United win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
However, his time in England has been repeatedly interrupted by fitness problems, including a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against Crystal Palace at the start of 2025.
That setback kept him out for most of the remainder of the 2024/25 season, while a calf problem also disrupted his progress during 2026.
More recently, a thigh issue forced him off at half-time against Leeds United and ruled him out of the Champions League trip to Como.
Now, the 28-year-old’s future at Manchester United is attracting attention across Europe, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reportedly monitoring his situation.
Spanish newspaper AS claims that Roma, Inter Milan and Como have also identified Martinez as a possible option ahead of next summer.
The report comes at a time when Martinez’s relationship with the club has reportedly become strained following comments he made after United’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico.
The defender called for greater investment and urged the club’s hierarchy, including technical director Jason Wilcox, to provide the squad with more players capable of competing at the highest level.
“I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox],” Martinez said, while also acknowledging that the players needed to take responsibility for their own performances.
Atletico’s interest has received an interesting boost from within their own dressing room.
Argentina international Cristian Romero, who joined the Spanish club from Tottenham, recently named Martinez as both the best player he had played alongside apart from Lionel Messi and the teammate he would most like to bring to his current club.
The pair know each other well from representing Argentina together, having shared major international successes, including the 2022 World Cup.
Martinez’s current contract runs until June 2027, although United have an option to extend it by another year.
AS suggested United are not considering activating that clause.
With several European sides monitoring his position and his future attracting increasing attention, United could face an important decision over one of their most important defenders.
