Liverpool have embarked on a new era with Arne Slot at the helm, and the impact has not taken long to show. In his first season, the Anfield outfit regained the Premier League throne with authority. The Dutch manager’s tactical structure has brought fresh air, combining high pressing with organized possession.

The squad has responded with solidity, and attacking players have made the difference. Now, with the domestic title in the bag, the management is aiming for bigger goals. The Champions League and the domestic cups are already real goals. To achieve this, the club know that they must reinforce key areas, and the attacking midfield seems to be in the immediate sights.

Liverpool receive huge boost regarding the signing of the attacking midfielder with 34 goals this season

In this situation, the interest in Florian Wirtz has gained momentum. The German youngster has attracted attention for his consistent influence on Bayer Leverkusen’s play. While a number of European giants have been looking at his situation, one of the favourites to sign him would be the English side.

David Ornstein has reported that Bayern Munich, who also sounded out the player, now believe it will not be possible to add him to their squad. That opens the way for Liverpool, who have even already received positive signals. Wirtz has reportedly been in the north-west of England exploring housing options. However, the most difficult part remains to be done: reaching a financial agreement with Leverkusen, who are in no hurry to sell.

From an analytical point of view, this potential transfer would fit in well with Slot’s plan. Wirtz, with his vision and mobility, embodies the type of player who can occupy the midfield in a 4-2-3-1 system or even move as an attacking midfielder in a 4-3-3.

His intelligence to find space, combined with his direct contribution in goals, makes him a player who adds creativity without sacrificing verticality. The evidence he has shown over the last two seasons backs him up. Wirtz has led a Leverkusen side that first became undefeated champions and then competed solidly, tallying 31 goals and assists in 45 games this season. His age does not limit him; on the contrary, his tactical maturity already places him among the best of his profile.

Liverpool, moreover, need to effectively replace what was once offered by Coutinho and more recently what was expected of Szoboszlai. Wirtz would not only be an immediate solution, but also a long-term gamble. Arne Slot has shown tactical flexibility, and having a natural playmaker could open up new options to dismantle low blocks. The team have had stretches where they have struggled to break lines, and that is where Wirtz would make a difference.

However, it’s not just a question of football fit. There is an institutional perspective. Liverpool want to send a message to the market: they are still competing at the highest level. Signing a talent that other giants wanted reinforces that message.

The economic factor will be key, and although Leverkusen does not want to sell, every player has a price. If the player is already keen on the move, that tips the balance. Will they succeed? There are positive signs, but no guarantees. What does seem clear is that, if they manage to sign him, this is not just a simple signing, but a statement of intent.
