Liverpool, who are managed by Arne Slot, have just finished an unsuccessful campaign where the Reds did not defend their Premier League title.
The Merseyside outfit, who had won the 2024-25 Premier League title by ten points, finished fifth this season with the club qualifying for next season’s Champions League by just three points.
Manchester United also completed their first league double over the Reds in ten years, compounding Liverpool’s season whilst also being a representation of the progress made by the Red Devils.
These results, alongside other disappointing results in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League, has left Liverpool supporters in doubt over Slot’s future as the summer transfer window approaches.
Now, Liverpool have announced on their official website that they have parted ways with Arne Slot with the manager leaving the club with immediate effect. The club have also announced that the process for appointing his successor is underway.
Fabrizio Romano has stated that Andoni Iraola is the clear favorite to take over from Slot as the next head coach.
Slot leaves Liverpool having guided his team to 66 wins, 18 draws, and 39 losses, with an average of 1.9 points per game.
The Dutchman won the Premier League during the 2024-25 season and the J.League World Challenge in 2025 although did not win other domestic silverware such as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
More importantly, arguably, Slot did not win any silverware in Europe during his reign at Liverpool with the club crashing out at the quarter-final stage during the 2025-26 season whilst being knocked out at the Round of 16 in the 2024-25 season.
Andoni Iraola, who is the favorite to replace Slot, was previously linked with the Manchester United permanent job before Michael Carrick was handed the role.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will approach Iraola to be the club’s next head coach although this may become clearer in the coming weeks as preparations for next season ramp up.
