Liverpool are ready to wait and sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi as a free agent after the current season. The Reds have decided not to test Palace with an offer during the January transfer window, despite their defensive frailties.
Liverpool have conceded four goals in three matches and lack depth in their defence after selling Jarell Quansah this summer. Furthermore, Joe Gomez lacks reliability due to his history of injuries, while Ibrahima Konate has struggled to perform so far.
At the same time, Konate’s contract issues and interest from Real Madrid have made things more complicated for the Reds. There is no denying that Arne Slot would have preferred signing Guehi during the summer, but now he has to look at the solutions internally if any worst-case scenario occurs.
According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool will wait until the end of the season to sign Guehi from Palace. The Reds will get their priority defensive target as a free agent instead of paying an inflated price in January.
Liverpool agreed a £35m deal for Guehi during the transfer deadline day, but Palace opted to block the late move. According to the Daily Mirror report, Palace boss Oliver Glasner threatened to resign if the deal went through.
However, as the situation is behind everyone and the focus shifts towards the new season, Liverpool fans hope that the club will not face trouble due to their lack of depth in defence. Currently, only Gomez is the naturally experienced centre-back to cover both Konate and captain Virgil van Dijk.
Wataru Endo has remained at the club, having the capability to play as a makeshift centre-back if required. The Reds have also signed Milos Kerkez and Jeremy Frimpong, who are more offensive-minded fullbacks. This move emphasises the need to have strong centre-backs who can cover a lot of space in transition.
