Liverpool head coach Arne Slot stated that £125 million club-record signing Alexander Isak needs “some time” before returning to his best.
That said, it appears that Isak could be in contention to make Liverpool’s squad for Sunday’s heavyweight Premier League match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Isak returned to training on Friday. Slot gave a further update during Liverpool's news conference.
“He will train with the team for the first time today after being three weeks out,” Slot said. “I know I said three weeks ago his preseason was ended, so now we have to see where he is. If you are three weeks only with the rehab that doesn’t bring him back to the levels he was three weeks ago. You cannot compare rehab with games of football or training with the team. So, again I have to say give him some time."

Isak has been sidelined since suffering a groin injury during Liverpool’s Oct. 22 Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. The 26-year-old striker was forced off at halftime.
Isak arrived at Anfield with massive expectations. So far, he has scored one goal in eight appearances across all competitions since joining the Reds from Newcastle.
Since completing the transfer, Isak has struggled for fitness. Recently, former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher stated that Slot is better off building Isak’s fitness in training instead of rushing him into match action.
Fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike has scored six goals in 15 appearances across all competitions.
“Ekitike has to play now,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “I can totally understand it isn’t easy – and this was always my reservation about buying two strikers for that much money. It’s very difficult to see a Liverpool team or any team get two strikers on the pitch, unless you’re playing three at the back.
“I understand trying to get Isak in the team although Ekitike was doing well because he’s a great player, you’ve got to get him fit and he’s also paid a lot of money for him. My mind boggles, going forward, at how this is going to work. But right now Ekitike has got the shirt, is playing really well and it would probably do Isak a little bit of good if he’s building up his fitness more in training than in games at the moment.”
Liverpool will also be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker and right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Both will miss out against Manchester City due to hamstring injuries.
While Alisson could be in contention to start following the November international break when Liverpool hosts Nottingham Forest on Nov. 22, Frimpong is further away from returning.
“Alisson, for sure (will return after the break), and I expect Jeremie back after the international break as well,” Slot said.
The Reds enter Sunday’s match in third place in the Premier League table after last Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Aston Villa. Spirits are high at Anfield after Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in Tuesday’s Champions League match.
Liverpool and Man City kick off at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday. The match will be carried on USA Network.
