Roberto De Zerbi taking up the reins at Tottenham Hotspur will be seen as a coup by the fans, given the situation the Lilywhites are in with relegation a genuine possibility.
The 46-year-old arrives in North London, tasked with leading a Spurs side without a league win in 2026 away from the drop zone. Spurs are currently lying just one point above the bottom three, ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge away at Sunderland on April 12.
The Italian, committing to a five-year contract without a relegation clause, means he will lead Tottenham in the Championship should they go down. Hopefully, such a situation does not arrive, and the club manages to preserve its top-flight entity. Simultaneously, the North London bosses are wasting no time in their bid to back the new gaffer in the transfer market.
According to a report from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Liverpool are in a commanding position to sign Juventus defender Gleison Bremer, having overtaken Premier League rivals Tottenham in the race.
Gleison Bremer has been a rock at the back for Juventus ever since joining from rivals Torino in 2022. He has made 115 appearances, chipping in with 11 goals and five assists. Amid an injury-curtailed campaign, the centre-back has contributed heavily to his team with goals and assists (three goals and three assists) in 19 Serie A appearances.
There is now a growing concern among Juventus fans that Bremer might leave at the end of the season. While manager Luciano Spalletti views him as ‘untouchable’, the board would find it difficult to resist a big bid this summer, the report adds. The Brazilian has a contract in Turin until 2029, which includes a €54million buyout clause.
Liverpool’s interest is understandable. Ibrahima Konate has only a few months left in his contract, and the Liverpool chiefs are concerned about losing him on a free transfer. Virgil van Dijk will turn 35 in July and has shown signs of being past his prime this season, with the Dutch star at the end of several errors. Joe Gomez could move on at the end of the season, meaning the Reds are starting at a potential crisis at the back.
Bremer, in that regard, could be a strong acquisition for the Reds. The Brazilian international’s mix of technical ability, physicality and volumes of experience would see him thrive in a demanding Premier League environment. Spurs, too, could do with his leadership skills and top-level experience, amid speculation surrounding the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
However, without the guarantee of competing in the Premier League next season, the Lilywhites would stand no chance of acquiring Bremer’s services. Thus, as things stand, Liverpool are best-placed to sign the Juventus defensive wall.
