Tottenham Hotspur youngster Luka Vuskovic is considered one of the finds of the Bundesliga season.
Deemed not mature enough for the Premier League, Spurs loaned him to HSV Hamburg last summer. While he has been tipped for big things from an early age, almost no one would have expected the centre-back to do as well as he has in his first taste of football at the highest level at HSV Hamburg.
Luka Vuskovic has been one of the best centre-backs across the major five leagues in Europe this season, with his rock-solid displays being one of the key reasons why Hamburg look set to retain their Bundesliga status. He has been one of the first names on Merlin Polzin’s teamsheet, registering five goals and an assist in 24 league appearances.
For his consistent displays at the back, Vuskovic was named March’s Rookie of the Month in the Bundesliga. The teenager was called up to the Croatian national team for the friendlies against Colombia and Brazil.
The Tottenham talent impressed for long stretches in Croatia’s 3-1 defeat to Brazil in Orlando earlier this week. After the game, Croatian legend and teammate Luka Modric praised Vuskovic. He has predicted a bright future for the young central defender.
“Definitely. He played two very good games, he has a great future ahead of him, he just needs to keep going,” Luka Modric was quoted by Football London.
Vuskovic was one of the bright spots of Croatia’s mini US-tour ahead of the World Cup this summer. Before the Brazil game, the Split-born prodigy started and scored in the 2-1 victory over Colombia last week. With his performances in the recent international break, the lanky defender has made a lasting impression and should have all but secured his place in Zlatko Dalic’s squad for the World Cup.
Vuskovic’s stock has risen significantly over the last six months thanks to his mature and composed displays in the Bundesliga. This shows the move to send him out on loan to gain experience at a high level has worked out for Spurs. But, in turn, it has actually led to European bigwigs starting to keep tabs on the youngster’s progress.
The big Croat, worth already a staggering €60m and the second-most valuable player at Tottenham, is wanted by Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona among several other European outfits. Spurs chiefs rate Vuskovic very highly and want him to be a part of the club’s future, but if the North Londoners fail to stay in the Premier League, they’d be at big risk of losing him in the summer.
