After failing to qualify for the World Cup for a third consecutive time, Italy will be playing a friendly match against Luxembourg with a focus on the future.

This past March, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup this summer after drawing 1-1 in regular time and losing 4-1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout.

Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to make a save in the penalty shootout and is one of the few players from that squad to make an appearance for the friendly match against Luxembourg tonight.

Italy will be coached by interim head coach Silvio Baldini. Baldini decided to call up 21 players who have no caps with the Italian national team.

Along with Donnarumma, Pio Esposito, Marco Palestra, and Niccolo Pisilli return to the national team to add experience to the young squad.

Luxembourg also failed to qualify for the World Cup after finishing 4th in their UEFA World Cup qualifiers. They finished on zero points after six games, which included two games against Germany, Slovakia, and Northern Ireland each.
