Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are enduring a lackluster MLS season this term.
Messi joined the club in 2023 and helped The Herons record their best season ever, finishing atop the Eastern Conference.
The performance level of the side, though, has dropped significantly this term. Javier Mascherano's team is fifth in the Eastern Conference with 22 points from 13 games.
Six wins, four draws, and three losses make up for a mediocre record. To add to that, Leo Messi's contract situation has taken the focus away from on-field performances.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's current deal expires at the end of the campaign. Messi has racked up 44 goals and 21 assists in 56 appearances since his move to Inter Miami.
The 37-year-old boasts an impressive 10 goals and three assists in 17 games this season. Leo Messi's presence certainly draws extra eyeballs to Inter Miami as well as the MLS.
ESPN journalist Diego Monroig has now provided a crucial update on the little magician's future with The Herons. His report claims,
"The negotiations started in November, it still exists, but it’s stalled right now due to details and conditions. The intention is to make use of the option for one more year so that Messi can stay at Inter Miami while preparing for the next World Cup."

The 2026 FIFA World Cup takes place in the USA, as well as the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Messi and Inter Miami will play in the Club World Cup. Having Messi as an active MLS player during the FIFA World Cup could be a mega commercial boost.
Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano has also spoken about Messi's renewal. He said,
"Hopefully, in a few weeks we can have some news about Leo. I think it will be very, very important for the club, the fans, and for MLS."
Leo Messi and Inter Miami return to action on May 15 against the Philadelphia Union.
