Manchester United are considering a move for World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez as they look to add depth to their goalkeeping squad.

Even before the summer window opened, there were already suggestions that United would be in the market for a new keeper.

That need has now become more urgent, with Andre Onana picking up an injury that will keep him out of pre-season and potentially the opening weeks of the campaign.

While Botafogo’s John Victor is an option being monitored, manager Ruben Amorim has shown a clear preference this summer for players with Premier League experience. That approach may continue when it comes to filling the goalkeeper spot.

Martinez is open to the move, and it appears United are preparing to take formal steps towards making it happen.

How much Man United are willing to spend on Emiliano Martinez

United aren’t working with unlimited funds this summer, so Ineos can’t afford to splash out on a new keeper without careful planning. Bringing in a World Cup winner and two-time Fifa Best Goalkeeper won’t be a cut-price deal.

Reports from Argentina suggest that talks have started between United and Martinez, and we’re now getting a clearer picture of what Ineos are prepared to offer.

La Nacion reports that United value Emiliano Martinez at around £33m ($44m), which is a bit under Villa’s asking price of £40m.

The gap between the two figures isn’t huge, though. With Martinez keen on the move, there’s a good chance both sides could come to an agreement soon.

Emiliano Martinez not in line with Ineos’ transfer approach

Since the Ineos takeover, United’s approach in the transfer market has looked quite different, even if this summer hasn’t shown much evidence of clear planning.

So far, every signing under Ineos has been either a young talent or someone just entering their prime. There’s been a clear focus on potential rather than established stars or players past their best.

While goalkeepers often hit their peak later than outfield players, it’s difficult to see Martinez, at 32, as a long-term option for United.

It’s also worth noting that in 2024/25, Martinez didn’t outperform Andre Onana — the player he’d be expected to replace at Old Trafford.

With limited funds available this summer, there are likely more pressing areas for Ineos to address than bringing in another high-profile goalkeeper.
