Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United remain confident about signing attacker Bryan Mbeumo, despite the transfer valuation stance from Brentford. The Bees are holding onto a much higher valuation than the one Man United paid for Cunha earlier this summer.
Brentford rejected the second offer of £62.5m from the Red Devils, a price equal to what they paid for Cunha. However, the bright side is the desire of the Cameroonian international to join United this summer over any other club.
United were concerned when Tottenham Hotspur entered the race for Mbeumo with his former boss, Thomas Frank, in charge. However, United’s immense stature in English football triumphed over the lure of a reunion and the Champions League football at Spurs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano told his viewers that United are confident in signing Mbeumo from Brentford despite their transfer valuation stance. He said:
“My understanding is that Brentford have constantly mentioned in the talks with Manchester United, the price tag of other players in the market, which is why they want more than United offered in their second bid. But my understanding is not that Brentford rejected the bid and talks stopped. My understanding is that the conversations between Man United and Brentford continue, and they are trying to find a solution. Manchester United remain calm, they remain confident, and they remain optimistic because the player has given total priority to United. The situation is very clear: he wants to wear red next season. As of tonight, no agreement, but talks continue as Man United try to find a final solution.”
United have prioritised the attacking department under Ruben Amorim during this summer transfer window amid a planned squad overhaul. However, United face the financial pressure despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s cash injection to avoid PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) problems.
United have to sell before they can buy any more players this summer, after completing Mbeumo’s signing. Nevertheless, Brentford’s stance has caused frustration among the fanbase with a recurring belief that only United faces such transfer issues.
There is a rightful concern that whenever United get involved in a player, the prices immediately go higher than anticipated. This hypothesis is backed by numerous inflated signings that the Red Devils have made in the past.
United needs to operate shrewdly as Amorim seeks quality over quantity in a squad that faces fewer fixtures next season. The lack of European competition fixtures could act as a blessing for United, who need more time under Amorim. The club’s confidence in the Portuguese is justified by his incredible past tenure at Sporting CP, where he achieved immense success.
