Marcus Rashford has been stripped of the No 10 shirt at Manchester United.
Rashford was initially seen as the perfect replacement for Wayne Rooney, who was the previous owner of the shirt. He wore the number for seven years at Old Trafford and had that pressure once held by Wayne Rooney before him.

But it appears that the decision was made because Rashford was upset about being left out of the Manchester United pre-season tour squad. This happened because the club already expected him to leave the club this window. The squad already has one clear out of left-wingers at the club, so his loss isn’t going to affect Amorim or the squad in the slightest.
Cunha is believed to be a much better fit for Amorim, who can also be used as a striker and an attacking midfielder if necessary. The £60 million new signing is a much more versatile option.
Rashford, still in his prime years, will not want to spend a full campaign on the bench. It’s now up to his entourage to find him a move that appeals to him, especially since he might not get picked up again until his contract ends.
This week, instead of responding quietly to his demotion, Rashford posted on social media, pledging to “give 100 per cent” in pre-season—a statement that didn’t land well with fans.
Supporters questioned why he hadn’t shown that level of commitment earlier in his United career and doubted whether this time would be any different.
It’s worth noting that the club leaked Rashford’s comments before training staff made the final call, suggesting that Amorim had already made up his mind about the player’s future.
Rashford’s relationship with Barcelona is well-known, and it circulated in May that he had transferred his agency’s base to Spain.
He has been keeping a close eye on the team, and it’s likely his moves will only increase in the future.
His desire to move on also appeared to be reflected in his interactions with team-mates last season, as the Sun reported that he would reportedly sit with headphones on in a quiet part of the dressing room.
Amorim saw no point in keeping a player whose mind and heart were elsewhere, especially with options like Oscar Gloukh and Gabriel Ominu ready to step in.
It’s likely that Rashford’s 2025 campaign at Old Trafford is over before it even began, with his spot now firmly reserved for Matheus Cunha.
