Bruno Fernandes remains the driving force for Manchester United, but how he is being used this season has raised a few eyebrows.
This season, in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, Fernandes has been deployed in a deeper central midfield position.
He is still performing well for United, though his influence around the box has not been quite as noticeable since the change.
The midfield is set for a rebuild in 2026, with Premier League names like Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton being considered.
But Atalanta’s Ederson is also believed to be on Ineos’ list of possible targets.
Manchester United were interested in Ederson during the summer window, but ultimately opted to focus on strengthening other areas of the squad.
The search for a central midfielder has picked up again, and reports out of Brazil suggest the Red Devils might revisit their interest in Ederson in 2026.
Manchester United are reportedly looking into the possibility of signing the Atalanta standout in January, having been made aware of the player’s availability, according to Flashscore.
Ederson is not just being viewed as a long-term replacement for Casemiro. There is also a belief within the club that he could help unlock Fernandes’ best qualities by giving him more freedom to push forward.
With the Portuguese star now operating from a deeper position, he needs a partner willing to sit back and shield the defence. It is just as important that this player has the energy to cover ground when United lose possession.
Players like Anderson, Baleba and Wharton could push the club’s spending up to £100 million by next summer.
But Ederson is a far more affordable option, with reports pricing him at £43m.
Although Atalanta had initially set a higher asking price – over £61 million – there is increasing acceptance that the Brazilian midfielder is likely to leave in 2026.
With only 18 months left on his contract at Atalanta, the Serie A club may soon feel pressure to sell rather than risk losing him on a free transfer.
