Former Manchester City left-back Sergio Gomez has returned to Spain for the first time since leaving as a teenager, joining Basque giants Real Sociedad. Gomez has signed a six-year deal with the Txuri-Urdin.

Gomez spent two seasons at City, but struggled for game time after a €15m move from Anderlecht, having impressed as an attacking left-back. Following the exits of loanees Kieran Tierney and Javi Galan, Real Sociedad have fought off competition from Roma to sign the 23-year-old.

He should fit in well to Imanol Alguacil’s attacking, ball-focused style of play, with Gomez himself remarking that he is a fan of their football. While no fee was officially reported, it is believed he will set La Real back around €9m. He will join up with the squad after the Olympics in Paris, as he is currently preparing with the rest of the Spain under-23 squad called up by Santi Denia.
