Manchester City had a quiet transfer window but may have landed an absolute gem

It was a quiet January transfer window for Manchester City. The champions decided to lay low in the market as is their usual method in the January window. Despite this they may have landed an absolute gem in River Plate sensation Claudio Echeverri. They also saw Kalvin Phillips depart the club as a host of fringe players left the champions.

Here is a round up of a quiet January transfer window for Manchester City but it may be looked back upon as an important window if Echeverri is as good as touted.

Incomings

The only signing the champions made was Claudio Echeverri from River Plate. SkySports reported that City completed the deal for £12.5 million plus add-ons. The wonderkid will spend the next 12 months on loan at River Plate before joining Pep Guardiola’s squad next January.

Manchester City’s capture of Claudio Echeverri is clearly a signing for the future. He has long been touted as the next big thing to come from Argentina so his signing is a coup for Manchester City. City fans will again keep an eye on River Plate’s performances to see how their next wonderkid performs before he joins the club next year. He is following a similar path to Julian Alvarez who spent 6 months on loan at River Plate before making his mark at Manchester City.

Departures

There were several departures from Manchester City in the January transfer window. The club moved on some players who were surplus to requirements and sold a promising young prospect.

Kalvin Phillips departed City on a 6 month loan deal to West Ham. The deal will give the England international an opportunity for first team football something he couldn’t get under Pep Guardiola.

Goalkeeper Zack Steffen departed the club for a move to MLS side Colorado Rapids. His move back to the United States sees the keeper depart the club on a permanent deal.

Youngster Alfie Harrison signed for Newcastle United in a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee. The young midfielder moves to Eddie Howe’s side after an impressive spell with the Manchester City Elite Development System.

There were also loan deals completed for Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Lewis Fiorini. Esbrand joined Cardiff City on a loan deal for the remainder of the season and Fiorini joined Charlton Athletic for the rest of the season.

Summary

It was a relatively quiet January transfer window for Manchester City. A host of deals were completed which saw fringe players depart the club.

But the signing of Claudio Echeverri may be looked back upon as an important signing for Manchester City. If the Argentine sensation fulfils his potential the 2024 January transfer window will be looked back upon as a successful one for the world champions.
