Eduardo Camavinga has gone from being billed as the future of Real Madrid’s midfield to a player his own manager is happy to move on.
Over the last two seasons, Camavinga has struggled with repeated injuries, seeing him fall down the pecking order, with Jose Mourinho happy to move the former France international on.
Manchester United have looked at both Camavinga and his Real Madrid team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, with the latter being considered an ideal signing to replace the departed Casemiro.
Now, Marca has reported that Real Madrid have offered Camavinga to Manchester City, with direct contacts held between the two clubs in recent hours.
It’s understood City are weighing up the proposal after Madrid made the 23-year-old available, with Mourinho, unconvinced by Camavinga’s form, leaving the midfielder out of his rebuild in his second spell in charge at the Bernabeu.
The former France international is valued at around £52 million (€60 million), with his stock having dropped after he was left out of his country’s World Cup squad.
Enzo Maresca’s side have a hole to fill after Bernardo Silva left the Etihad for Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, with City looking to invest in their midfield.
The Citizens have already spent heavily in that position, signing England international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million (€135 million).
They also pushed to sign Sandro Tonali, only for the Newcastle midfielder to agree a move to Tottenham Hotspur instead.
Spurs are set to pay an initial £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons, a deal worth up to £100 million (€116 million), having beaten City to his signature.
Should City now land Eduardo Camavinga, Madrid are considered unlikely to also sanction Tchouameni’s departure, a scenario that would leave United’s own midfield pursuit far harder.
For now, The Red Devils can only watch as City move first on a player they have long admired, with Mourinho’s rebuild set to shape where the rest of the summer’s business falls.
