Manchester United have endured a torrid week that has plunged Michael Carrick’s early tenure into genuine scrutiny.

A controversial derby defeat to ten-man Manchester City was followed just four days later by an extraordinary Carabao Cup collapse against Brighton, United throwing away a 2-0 lead to crash out 3-2 and suffer their first home defeat from that position in 50 years.

Those results have left United with their joint-worst start to a Premier League season after four games, adding pressure on Carrick barely months into his permanent reign.

Amid all that turmoil at first-team level, there has at least been some fixture news to look forward to further down the club’s football pyramid.

United’s academy sides continue to compete in youth competition regardless of how the senior team’s season unfolds.

Manchester United Premier League International Cup fixtures announced

Manchester United’s Premier League International Cup fixtures for this season have now been announced on their website.

Adam Lawrence’s Under-21 side have four group-stage games in this year’s Premier League International Cup, all to be played at the Progress with Unity Stadium in Leigh.

United open against Monaco on 30 October, before Juventus visit a fortnight later, followed by Belgian side Genk in mid-December.

The final group fixture doesn’t come until next year, with Valencia travelling to England on 27 January.

Borussia Dortmund are the current holders of the trophy, which is contested by Under-21 sides from clubs across Europe.

United’s own involvement in the competition last season ended in disappointing fashion, eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Real Madrid’s Castilla side.

That tie finished 4-2 after extra time at Old Trafford, with Jack Moorhouse and Shea Lacey both on target in regulation time before Real Madrid pulled away once the game went beyond 90 minutes.

Lawrence will be hoping this season’s campaign yields a deeper run, with United having already shown promising form domestically in Premier League 2 having won their opening two fixtures against Ipswich and Leicester.

The confirmed schedule gives United’s academy prospects a clear run of fixtures to build towards over the coming months, offering a rare source of stability while the senior side works to correct its own faltering start to the season.
