Manchester United continue to scan the market for central midfield reinforcements as Ruben Amorim shapes a longer-term rebuild, with energy, ball-carrying and defensive security now central to the club’s recruitment thinking.

That focus has sharpened in recent weeks amid uncertainty around Casemiro’s long-term future, Bruno Fernandes’ recent injury concerns, and ongoing questions surrounding Kobbie Mainoo’s role and contract situation.

With Amorim keen to add athleticism and intensity to the engine room, United have been compiling a shortlist of younger midfielders capable of thriving in a high-tempo system.

The search has been driven by a desire to find profiles who can cover large spaces, resist the press and contribute defensively without sacrificing technical quality.

In this regard, they have also recently established contact with Ruben Neves’ agent, Jorge Mendes.

Several Premier League-based options have been assessed internally, particularly those already adapted to the physical demands of English football.

As a result, the club have prioritised midfielders who combine age profile, tactical intelligence and resale potential.

Alongside names such as João Gomes, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, one particular player has stood out to United’s recruitment staff.

He is viewed as a potential hybrid No.6/No.8, capable of operating in a double pivot or as a single defensive anchor depending on system demands.

That player is Carlos Baleba, whose performances—despite an inconsistent campaign—have kept him firmly on United’s radar.

The 21-year-old has made around 20 appearances across all competitions this season for Brighton & Hove Albion, though he has completed a full 90 minutes only twice, largely due to managed minutes following injury rather than issues with form.

Those fitness concerns resurfaced on the international stage, as Baleba’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign suffered an early setback when he was forced off at half-time of Cameroon’s opening match against Gabon.

Starting in a deeper role behind Bryan Mbeumo, he required treatment shortly before the interval and was replaced by Jean Onana after failing to recover in time for the second half.

The episode underlined the stop-start nature of his season, with his physical condition continuing to be closely managed by both club and country.

Despite that setback, Baleba remains highly regarded within Cameroon’s setup and at Brighton, while United continue to monitor his progress as part of their wider midfield rebuild.
