Manchester United are ready to make an audacious bid to sign Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali to fix their midfield. The Red Devils have faced problems in every department within their squad and intend to make a summer squad overhaul.
The Red Devils’ disastrous campaign involved the sacking of Erik ten Hag and the subsequent appointment of manager Ruben Amorim. However, Amorim’s tactics failed to bring the best out of the squad that he inherited from Ten Hag this season.
Amorim will receive an opportunity to rectify the persistent problem that has haunted Man United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Their poor transfer activities over the last decade have crippled them financially while the wage budget continued to rise consistently.
United will use the summer window to sell their surplus and ease the wage budget, while signing players Amorim desires. Amorim deploys a three-man defence with two midfielders, who are involved in all phases of the game with immense mobility.
According to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via FourFourTwo), United are ready to make a £100m bid for Newcastle midfielder Tonali to solve their midfield problem. Tonali has played a pivotal role for Newcastle, helping win the Carabao Cup and fight for the Champions League spot.
The 25-year-old has made 43 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, scoring six goals and providing three assists this season. The Italy international’s playmaking, mobility and work ethic have helped Newcastle dominate most of the competition in midfield.
United’s financial situation remains a big hindrance if they truly intend to lure Tonali from the Magpies during the summer. The Red Devils could sell players before they decide to make any audacious offer for the Italian international.
Nevertheless, it is a positive sign that United are targeting players who have a better chance of succeeding. Amorim cannot afford to make any mistakes in the transfer market, with the club facing big repercussions if anything goes wrong.
