Given the underwhelming season that the Lilywhites have endured this season, the roster at Hotspur Way is becoming nothing short of a candy shop as clubs line up to price away best players from Spurs’ roster on a cheap move as they look to take advantage of the current situation at N17.
And among the players that is generating a lot of interest is centre back Micky van de Ven, with the latest from Boy Hotspur suggesting that Manchester United are preparing a bid of £55-60m for his services. The report states that Michael Carrick & Co. have identified the Spurs centre-back as a priority defensive target as Old Trafford prepares for Champions League football next season.
Alongside the Manchester Reds, Liverpool are also understood to retain interest in the 25-year-old former Wolfsburg CB, with the Merseysiders looking at him as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. And this could possibly start a bidding war between two of the big six PL clubs as they look to pounce on VDV’s services from N17.
Van de Ven has a contract that runs until 2029, which means Spurs do hold significant leverage over any sale. But his departure looks increasingly likely irrespective of where Tottenham finishes.
Former Tottenham gaffer Ange Postecoglou had described Van de Ven in glowing terms. He insisted that his ability to cover ground is “just phenomenal” and that the 25-year-old could go up against any striker in the world without fear of being outmuscled or outrun (that is something we have also seen time and again from him in the years he has donned the Spurs badge).
Despite those qualities, Van de Ven (like many Lilywhites players) has divided opinion at N17 in the ongoing campaign. His performances have come under scrutiny, with questions being asked over his attitude from sections of supporters. And that has added a layer of possible departure when the summer comes around.
For Manchester United, you understand the appeal of taking VDV to M16 given that they have qualified for the Champions League for next season and need a centre-back who is capable of operating at that level consistently.
For Liverpool, it is more of a longer-term need as the Merseysiders prepare to bring a successor for Van Dijk who turns 34 in July.
And Tottenham, the chiefs at Hotspur Way will surely try to keep hold of him.
