Manchester United are reluctant to sell Rasmus Hojlund after the Danish forward decided to stay and fight for his place. The 22-year-old has struggled to establish himself as the reliable number nine for the Red Devils since joining the club.
United signed Joshua Zirkzee to compete with Hojlund and take some pressure off the youngster, but the Dutchman also struggled. As Ruben Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag last season, the glaring issue became more frustrating with the change in tactics.
The Portuguese enjoyed incredible success at Sporting CP by playing Viktor Gyokeres, one of the strikers linked with United, regularly. However, Amorim has struggled to bring the best out of Hojlund so far, despite his immense potential as a forward.
United’s collective struggle is a mitigating factor for the Denmark international, as he craved for more help from his teammates. The 22-year-old forward made 52 appearances for United in all competitions last season, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists.
According to reports, Hojlund wants to stay at United and fight for his place amid strong interest from Inter Milan. Speaking on The Game podcast, The Times reporter Charlotte Duncker revealed that United are reluctant to sell Hojlund this summer. She said:
“Obviously, if someone came in with a great fee for Hojlund, they’d accept it. But there’s a genuine reluctance in that they think he’s a better player than everyone’s seeing. There’s a hope that maybe they (Manchester United) can still polish him over the summer and see Hojlund 2.0 next season.”
United signed Hojlund from Atalanta for £72m under Ten Hag as a long-term project in the summer of 2023. However, the pressure at a club of United’s stature is very high and demands a quick return, particularly at that price.
Hojlund has failed to contribute according to his reputation as a goal poacher and has struggled to influence the game. The Denmark international’s holdup play and linkup with his teammate are limited as he prefers staying at the shoulder of the opposition defenders.
However, there is no denying that Hojlund possesses incredible potential, and with confidence, he could become a real threat. Considering the financial restraints that United are facing, if Hojlund stays, then the club could opt not to sign a new number nine this summer.
