Michael Carrick’s Manchester United honeymoon has turned into a nightmare, with the manager facing mounting pressure following a disastrous start to the season.

The former midfielder initially appeared destined for success after replacing Ruben Amorim in January.

United won 12 of their final 17 Premier League matches, securing third place and Champions League qualification before Carrick received a permanent contract.

However, that optimism has evaporated.

United have won just two of their opening 12 competitive matches this season, sitting 16th following Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth.

Carrick’s reputation as a calm, approachable coach has also been tested by growing dressing-room tensions.

During United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, he was involved in a heated exchange with Matheus Cunha before substituting the Brazilian at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes subsequently questioned Carrick’s tactics, criticising United’s decision not to press their opponents aggressively.

Carrick responded by leaving Fernandes on the bench throughout the Bournemouth defeat, although the pair have since held talks to resolve their differences.

The manager now faces Saturday’s Chelsea clash knowing another defeat could prove decisive.

Meanwhile, another Manchester United attacker has publicly attracted criticism from his own coach following a dramatic encounter.

Manchester United forward criticised by manager

Manchester United loanee Chido Obi has been criticised by Willem II interim manager Adrie Koster following Tuesday’s dramatic 4-3 Dutch Cup victory over Helmond Sport.

Speaking to Brabants Dagblad, Koster questioned the 18-year-old’s defensive contribution after entering as a substitute.

Willem II squandered much of their 4-1 advantage after Jaden Slory received a red card, leaving Obi struggling with his defensive responsibilities.

“It’s partly a matter of mindset, but also youthful exuberance,” Koster explained.

“That boy has never experienced anything like this before.”

However, the manager insisted Obi was not deliberately neglecting his responsibilities.

“We shouldn’t focus everything on him. This is simply part of his learning process. But we are going to talk to him about it.”

Chido Obi joined Willem II on a season-long loan in September after struggling for first-team opportunities at Old Trafford.

He previously scored twice in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Helmond Sport, demonstrating his attacking potential.

However, limited competitive minutes and the latest criticism underline the challenges facing United’s highly-rated youngster.
