Manchester United are considering terminating a goalkeeper’s loan spell, highlighting how quickly a temporary move can turn into a setback.
Loan deals can transform careers. For young players, they offer an escape from academy football and an opportunity to experience the demands of senior competition.
Others leave to rediscover their confidence, rebuild their reputation or secure the minutes unavailable at their parent club.
They say never fall in love with a loan player, but United have witnessed some remarkable temporary spells.
Amad Diallo scored 14 goals in 39 Championship appearances for Sunderland during the 2022/23 campaign, helping the Black Cats reach the play-offs.
Jesse Lingard enjoyed a similarly memorable spell at West Ham in 2021, scoring nine Premier League goals in just 16 appearances.
However, not every loan produces the desired outcome.
Andre Onana is currently enjoying his second consecutive season at Trabzonspor, having departed Old Trafford following the arrival of Senne Lammens.
The Cameroonian has registered three clean sheets in seven Turkish league appearances this season, although his long-term future remains uncertain.
Indeed, Onana reportedly wants a fresh challenge rather than extending his stay in Turkey for another campaign.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are considering recalling goalkeeper Solomon Honor from Southport FC in January.
The 6ft 6in shot-stopper joined United from Blackburn Rovers earlier this year, initially providing additional goalkeeping support during training.
He subsequently joined Southport on a season-long loan in July, hoping to gain valuable experience in senior football.
However, a managerial change and the arrival of Everton loanee Douglass Lukjanciks have significantly reduced his opportunities.
Honor has consequently spent the past month training at Carrington rather than featuring regularly for Southport.
United are keeping his registration active in case circumstances change, but an official January recall is now under consideration.
No final decision has been made, with the club continuing to assess the best route for his development.
