The summer rebuild at Old Trafford is starting to take shape.
It’s clear that tough decisions are being made as Manchester United gets ready to change both their wage bill and squad identity.
The club’s management recognises that some long-standing issues can no longer be postponed.
One of these issues involves a high-profile attacker whose relevance at the club has faded each season.
United is now preparing to walk away from a deal that once represented ambition, even if it means getting nothing financially in return.
According to The Sun, Jadon Sancho will be allowed to leave when his contract ends this summer.
There are no plans for an extension or any attempt to secure a late transfer fee.
Jadon Sancho’s £73 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 failed to meet expectations.
Despite the high hopes, the winger struggled to secure a place under various managers and spent much of his time with United on the fringes or away on loan.
Jadon Sancho is currently on loan at Aston Villa, but even that move hasn’t done much to boost confidence in his long-term future at the top level.
He has started only six league matches this season and has had trouble breaking into Unai Emery’s strongest lineup.
While Villa is covering most of his £200,000-a-week wages, there are doubts about whether they will activate any option to keep him beyond summer.
United, on their part, have decided that extending Sancho’s contract just to maintain resale value would be more of a risk than a benefit.
Letting him leave for free would finally lift a major salary burden and close a chapter that has dragged on for years.
His decline at Old Trafford sped up after a public fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, after which he did not play another league game for the club.
Since then, loan spells at Dortmund and Chelsea have not reignited his career, with Chelsea even paying a £5 million penalty to avoid a £25 million obligation to buy.
He briefly returned to Carrington, where he trained away from the first team before securing a late move to the Midlands.
Currently, his performance is limited, with just one goal across all competitions and a single assist in a recent draw against AFC Bournemouth.
Emery has publicly discussed “improvement” and praised the winger’s work rate, but patience is wearing thin as Villa seeks European qualification.
For United, this decision is more about finding closure than placing blame.
