Manchester United defender Harry Maguire wants to sign new contract

Manchester United should see a lot of transfer activity in their club this summer. They are unbeaten in the Europa League this season but have been terrible in the Premier League. A lot of players might be leaving the club in the summer, and United’s hierarchy have to make some big decisions at the end of the season.

One of the players whose future might be decided is Harry Maguire. The English international faced a lot of criticism for his performance in the initial phase of his time at Old Trafford. However, lately, the centre-back has been very important for Manchester United.

The Telegraph has reported that manager Ruben Amorim is satisfied with his performances, and he was the reason why the club triggered an extra year in his contract. Now, the same report has revealed that United want Maguire to sign a contract extension beyond 2026. Sam Wallace has reported that the player is also content at the club and wants a new contract at Manchester United beyond the end of next season and would ideally like to finish his career at Old Trafford.

Talking about his stats, Maguire has conceded 22 goals and kept six clean sheets in 23 matches in the Premier League 2024/2025 season. That means when the player is on the pitch, his team concedes a goal every 68 minutes. Moreover, he has made 1.52 tackles and 2.12 interceptions for every 90 minutes he was on the pitch. Maguire is also racking up about 4.18 clearances at the same time.

Harry Maguire’s desire to sign a new contract at Manchester United—and potentially see out his career at Old Trafford—speaks volumes about his resilience and deep connection to the club. Despite facing heavy criticism and stretches of inconsistent form, he’s continued to show professionalism and commitment, qualities that still hold weight in a squad undergoing transition.

His leadership and experience remain assets. The fact that United are considering extending his deal beyond 2026 shows they still see value in what he brings, not just on the pitch, but in the dressing room as well.

Of course, sentiment can’t override logic. The key question is whether Maguire can sustain high-level performances into his mid-30s. But if he’s willing to embrace a rotational role and help guide younger defenders, keeping him around could offer the kind of stability and continuity every top club needs.
