Manchester United derby clash officially rescheduled

Manchester United endured a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Michael Carrick’s side were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the first Manchester derby since Pep Guardiola’s departure, despite Phil Foden’s early red card handing United over an hour with a numerical advantage.

Erling Haaland settled the contest with a controversial goal on the hour mark, extending his remarkable record against United to nine goals in eight Premier League appearances against the club.

That defeat followed a 2-2 draw with Everton the previous weekend, leaving United with one win, one draw and two losses from their opening four league fixtures.

Manchester United fixture officially rescheduled

Away from the senior side’s inconsistent start, United have confirmed, via their website, a fixture update to their own Under-21 schedule this week.

The Reds’ away derby with City in Premier League 2, originally due to be played on Saturday, was called off.

It has been rearranged for Monday 5 April 2027, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm at the City Football Academy.

United’s next outing in the competition comes on Friday night, with Adam Lawrence’s side travelling south to take on Brentford.

The Under-21s have made an impressive start to their own season, winning both of their opening two Premier League 2 fixtures.

They beat Ipswich 5-0 before following that up with a 4-1 victory over Leicester City, showing considerably more attacking fluency than the senior side has managed so far.

Several fringe first-team players have continued to feature for the Under-21s this season, including Shea Lacey.

Lawrence’s side represent an important pipeline for Carrick’s senior squad, with academy graduates increasingly relied upon.

The rearranged fixture against City’s Under-21s in April will offer a fresh opportunity for United’s younger players to test themselves against their local rivals, regardless of how the senior sides’ own rivalry develops between now and then.

Friday’s trip to Brentford represents the more immediate priority, with United looking to maintain their unbeaten start in Premier League 2 heading into the autumn.
